PIPING HOT STUFF

BAGPIPE rockers The Red Hot Chilli Pipers are set to leave their day jobs after winning a prime-time TV talent contest.

The Glasgow band scooped £10,000 on Saturday night when they triumphed in an episode of BBC1 show When Will I Be Famous?

While the boys were on air, their website was flooded with 120 offers of work.

And band member Willie Armstrong hopes the show has given them the boost they need to make it as full-time musicians.

Willie, 42, a firefighter, said yesterday: "It's our dream to go full-time and it's what we've been working for.

"We've been offered a coastto- coast American tour with a hotel chain on the back of Saturday's show.

"Now, we're just going to see how it goes. We'll have to take stock, weigh up all the offers and decide how the Chilli Pipers will go forward."

The Chilli Pipers have been together five years and have played all over the world, but Saturday's win could give them their big break.

Willie said it was "amazing" to take top prize in the variety show, hosted by Graham Norton. He added: "We enjoyed ourselves and I think that came across.

"We went back to the hotel, put £1000 of our prize behind the bar, and stayed up drinking until 3am with our families."

Lindsay Lohan's publicist has fired back at the mother of a young fan after the 40-something New Yorker alleged the Mean Girls star was driving drunk after a Hollywood party, relates AP.

Ellen Morrissey has gone public with her nightmare Lohan encounter, claiming the troubled actress reeked of alcohol as she sped off, almost hitting the mother and her daughter Erin, 13, after the teenager asked to have her photo taken with the star.

Speaking to America's National Enquirer, Morrissey recalls spotting Lohan outside celebrity hang-out the Hotel Roosevelt at 2:30am on February 18 when the actress was on a break from rehab.

She ran up to Lohan and begged her to pose for a picture with her daughter, a huge fan.
Morrissey says, "Lindsay was holding a glass of clear liquid with a wedge of lemon in it, and she seemed to slur when she spoke. She also appeared to stagger to her car."

But Lohan's representatives are playing the incident down, stating, "Ellen Morrissey should be more concerned about her daughter being up at 2:30am than about Lindsay."

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — Former Playboy Playmate Anna Nicole Smith was laid to rest Friday with all the pomp and circumstance of a royal funeral, but litigation surrounding a multi-million-dollar inheritance and the paternity of her baby daughter remain very much alive.

The principals waging a three-way custody battle over 5-month-old Dannielynn — Smith's companion Howard K. Stern, her mother Virgie Arthur and former boyfriend Larry Birkhead— walked into the white-columned church, and for at least a moment their bickering was put aside for the lavish closed-casket service.

Smith was then taken to her final resting place in a mahogany coffin draped in a rhinestone-studded pink blanket as police, smartly dressed in white belted tunics and pith helmets, maintained order. Onlookers, mostly Bahamians, spontaneously broke out into the hymn When Peace Like a River as the white hearse carrying the 39-year-old blonde bombshell and the rest of the funeral cortege arrived at Lakeview Memorial Gardens.

In a last-minute bid to halt the burial, Arthur sought to have Supreme Court Justice Anita Adams grant her client custody of Smith's body, but the Bahamian judge denied it, according to Lilliemae MacDonald, the justice's secretary. That cleared the way for Smith to be buried next to her 20-year-old son Daniel, who died of apparent drug use in September.

When the onlookers saw Arthur arrive at the cemetery, they booed. They cheered when Birkhead stepped out of his limo. The guests disappeared under a green tent that covered the gravesite amid tight security. Smith was being buried in a tiara and custom-made, beaded gown, said organizer Patrik Simpson of Beverly Hills, Calif.

"Her soul is at rest now. I am satisfied," said Tanisha Grant, a local restaurant owner who was friends with Smith. For the funeral, Grant wore a short black cocktail dress that Smith had given her a few months ago, telling Grant it no longer fit her.

Some tourists were amazed at all the security and media.

"She's got a presidential kind of media frenzy going on," said Christie Rathgaber, a 59-year-old nurse from Columbus, Ohio who happened by the Mount Horeb Baptist Church, where services were held.

"I'm just incredulous at all the fuss," she added. "She was not a world figure. She was not a queen. She was not a president. She was not anything ... It's just way over the top."

Hundreds of islanders and tourists crowded behind steel barricades outside the church. Rock guitarist Slash, formerly of Guns N' Roses, was spotted going inside.

"Today we share our grief with all of you," said Richard Milstein, the court-appointed advocate for Dannielynn. "Today we come to you to carry out the final, most sacred, solemn act provided to any individual."

There appeared to be fewer than 100 guests overall at the church service, which was closed to all media but Entertainment Tonight. An organizer said about 300 had been invited to the private ceremony.

The legal wrangling that began with Smith's unexpected death at age 39 won't end with the funeral: There is pending legal action on the custody of Dannielynn, who stands to inherit a fortune, and on ownership of a Bahamas mansion Smith used to establish residency in the islands last year.

Smith married Texas oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II in 1994 when he was 89 and she was 26. The reality TV star and had been fighting his family over his estimated $500 million fortune since his death in 1995. In May the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Smith could continue to pursue her claim in federal courts in California

An official inquest into Daniel Smith's death is scheduled in Nassau for March 27. He died in his mother's hospital room days after she gave birth to Dannielynn.

Dr. Joshua Perper, the Broward medical examiner, said he will announce Anna Nicole Smith's cause of death next week. She died on Feb. 8 in Florida.

"This was a complex case," Perper said. "It was an unusual case from a medical point of view."

Associated Press writers John Pain and Lisa Orkin Emmanuel contributed to this report from Miami.

Gym Class Heroes
"Cupid's Chokehold"
From As Cruel as School Children

Of course the MySpace generation was eventually going to want its own fluffy, unthreatening rap group, but that doesn't make this awkward, rhythmless plod any easier to take. It's all pretty dire: the sproinging bass, the ineffectual DJ scratches, the off-kilter acoustic-guitar lurch, the severe guest yelps from Fall Out Boy frontman Patrick Stump. But it's lead Hero Travis McCoy's sub-Atmosphere, wounded-mutter sing-rap that drops "Cupid's Chokehold" beyond Fuse filler and into apocalyptic atrocity. If this turns out to be anything more than a novelty hit, a few of us are going to start missing Crazy Town.

Akon
"Don't Matter"
Off Konvicted

When Tara Reid humped his leg at Sundance, tabloids called Akon a rapper. It's a dumb mistake but an understandable one, considering his proclivities for jailhouse videos and Snoop Dogg collabos. This warm, likable cartoon-calypso nugget should go a long way toward correcting any misconceptions. Akon hasn't let his guard down like this since "Mr. Lonely," but his autotuned glide here feels completely second-nature. The crooned chorus gives way to a bit of cheery double-time dancehall patter; he's begging for forgiveness, but there's not even a hint of doubt in his robotic tenor. And when the airy synth-whistles dissolve into the hand-percussion glide of the coda, it could stretch on for hours.

Daughtry
"It's Not Over"
Off Daughtry

After years of theatrically troglodytic gargle-moans from the likes of Creed and Staind, it's sort of refreshing to hear a post-grunge power-ballad that actually hits its marks. American Idol reject and gazillion-selling growler Chris Daughtry might be a hack, but at least he's a professional, and this desperation lament sticks to a satisfying and familiar formula, starting with a dejected mutter and surging into a scenery-chewing lumberjack wail with practiced efficiency. "Let it out/Let it out/Don't get caught up in yourself," he warns on the bridge, and it doesn't even particularly matter what "it" is as long as our lighters are in the air, where they belong.

After her contentious divorce from Charlie Sheen and dating her friend’s (Heather Locklear) ex-husband (Richie Sambora), it’s safe to say Denise Richards is no stranger to trouble.

But as you’ll see in her upcoming reality show, Denise isn’t shy about any of it. Access Hollywood’s Nancy O’Dell found that out first hand when she sat down with Denise for a candid interview.

“You were criticized for your relationship with Richie, to put it mildly” Nancy noted.

“Criticized? Yeah, slightly,” Denise sheepishly grinned.

“Have you reached out to Heather [Locklear]? Will that be part of the show?” Nancy asked.

“Yes, Heather is going to be the first guest on my show,” Denise laughed. “Uh, no.”

Able to laugh after what can only be described as a difficult and tumultuous couple of years, this summer Denise will be airing it all on her own E! reality show – and we mean everything!

“Well, I’ll be honest because people will know. Um, I have 10 dogs,” Denise revealed. “Yeah, after I got my divorce… Charlie didn’t like a whole lot of dogs.”

“Is this why you got your divorce?” Nancy joked. “He didn’t love your dogs?”

“No, he loves dogs – just a small amount of them and I’ve always wanted a lot,” she replied.

Consider it mission accomplished.

But Denise’s pet parade doesn’t stop there – add to that two guinea pigs and two pot-bellied pigs.

“So we’re going to see your pigs in the show. And we’re going to see your dogs in the show. How about a fella?” Nancy inquired.

“I have a fella that I’m seeing,” Denise revealed. “His name is George.”

“George Clooney?” Nancy jokingly asked.

“No, that would be nice,” Denise laughed.

And once the cameras start rolling on her as-of-yet untitled reality show, George, the pets, Denise’s two daughters and the actress herself will all be in a permanent spotlight. So is Denise ready for that kind of attention?

“Did it take a lot of convincing?” Nancy asked her.

“Well, Ryan is very charming and very convincing,” Denise smiled.

That would Ryan Seacrest – who asked Denise to do the show, as his company will be producing it. But the “Idol” host’s charm isn’t the only reason Denise is on board.

“I want people to see what I'm really like and then judge for themselves,” Denise concluded. “And then if they still hate me then, that's their choice.”

Kim Kardashian is rumored to be engaged to boyfriend Reggie Bush!

Sources close to Kim Kardashian have revealed to OK! magazine that the 27-year-old stylist and "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star is now engaged. To who, you ask? It has been said that her boyfriend, 22-year-old Heisman trophy winning football player Reggie Bush is the lucky man. The pair were together in Miami on Dec. 31, where Kim hosted Mansion’s Tanqueray and Ciroc New Year’s Bash in South Beach alongside Bush.

While no diamonds were shining on Kim’s ring finger, she did admit to OK! that things are getting serious. However, she added, “One thing I did learn from ‘07 was to try to keep it as private as possible so I’m trying to hold that close to my heart but I’m here with everybody that I love.” Despite that New Year’s resolution to not blab about her love life, Kim, who was joined at the party with her sisters Kloe Kardashian and Kourtney Kardashian, told OK! her holiday with Reggie, has been “the best!”

HOLLYWOOD — Eva Mendes has quite the introduction in the kinetic action-thriller "We Own the Night" as party girl Amada Juarez. Dressed in provocative lingerie, Amada and boyfriend Bobby (Joaquin Phoenix) get hot and heavy to the pulsating beat of Blondie's "Heart of Glass."

Although not in the "Lust, Caution" category, the erotic sequence in the film, which opened last week, does involve nudity for the 33-year-old actress and some very R-rated heavy petting.

"I was really nervous about starting with a strong sex scene," says Mendes, who was born in Miami of Cuban parents and raised in the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles. "But she's a lot more than that, and people will see that."

Written and directed by James Gray ("The Yards"), "We Own the Night," set in New York in the late 1980s, revolves around Bobby, the black sheep of his family. Instead of becoming a decorated cop like his brother Joseph (Mark Wahlberg) and father, Burt (Robert Duvall), Bobby is the manager of a successful disco. He and Amada are the darlings of the scene — they drink, smoke marijuana and snort cocaine with abandon. But when Joseph and his crime unit take on the Russian drug dealer working out of the club, Bobby and Amada are caught in the middle.

Fight scene wasn't easy

Mendes admits she doesn't shy away from nudity in movies.

"I think I have a much more European approach to nudity," says the actress, who admires European directors including Michelangelo Antonioni and Federico Fellini. "If it's relevant and not exploiting me, I'm OK with it," she says.

Doing an explicit love scene was nerve-racking. "This was actually my first love scene," she says. "I've avoided it quite nicely. You do the best you can do. James Gray made me feel really protected, so it was me, Joaquin, the director and the cameraman and the director of photography."

She found doing an explosive fight sequence with Phoenix much more emotionally and physically racking. "I almost prefer doing a love scene, as long as it's coming from love, than doing a scene where we are hitting each other and screaming obscenities at each other and really going to that place," says Mendes.

"We rehearsed and talked about the fight, but what we didn't do is really block the scene once we started fighting, because we wanted it to go where it naturally went. We ended up falling behind a lamp and you can't even see me. It was so real."

And depressing. "I went home and I couldn't shake that off. It was really an ugly place you don't want to go to; it's like having the worst fight with a loved one."

Gray admits he wasn't familiar with Mendes' work before approaching her for the project. "Sometimes you take risks with actors," he says. "But I really feel with her I lucked out in a really good way. She has wonderful emotional intelligence."

But Mendes did not initially accept Gray's offer. Most of her roles have been the "girlfriend" part, and while Mendes has brought an intelligence, spirit and independence to the characters, she wasn't looking to play another one. She turned down "We Own the Night" for a year.

"Then James made three different passes at the script and gave me the last pass," she recalls. "My character was a lot better, and by then Joaquin was attached. I ended up saying yes almost reluctantly, but it has been the most amazing experience of my life."

Mendes says she always trusts her "no" reflex. "I drive my agents crazy," she says. "I say no to a lot of things. I could certainly be out there a lot more, but I feel if I am not out there the way I want to be out there, what's the use in working?"

The word "no" wasn't in her vocabulary when it came to working on the comedy she just wrapped: writer-director Diane English's updated version of Clare Boothe Luce's classic comedy "The Women."

Mendes plays the conniving Crystal, the role Joan Crawford portrayed in the 1939 movie — a brazen beauty who steals the husband of Meg Ryan's character. Annette Bening, Candice Bergen, Jada Pinkett Smith and Debra Messing also star.

"I came from working on 'We Own the Night,' which was an all-male cast, into working on 'The Women,' " Mendes says, laughing. "You would think I would be wanting to look good at rehearsals for the boys, but I never cared more about how I looked than with the girls. We would all come in our cutest casual outfits at rehearsal, and we would spend the first 15 minutes complimenting each other."

HURLEY - Steven Nekos, the Republican and Independence Party candidate for town justice and the owner of the Hurley Mountain Inn, has filed a $4 million lawsuit against Hurley resident Dean Kraus for revealing information about a 1999 arrest and subsequent dismissal of a case alleging Nekos solicited sex in the men's room of a popular New Paltz nightspot.

The lawsuit claims "libel and slander and breach of confidential information" by Kraus caused harm to Nekos' personal life and his business.

The suit was filed Wednesday in state Supreme Court in Ulster County and contends Kraus distributed material considered confidential because the criminal case against Nekos was dismissed on technicalities.

Kraus, who lives on Hillside Avenue in Hurley, was described by Nekos as a political operative.

In his lawsuit, Nekos acknowledges being arrested on Nov. 5, 1999, and charged with third-degree sexual abuse after allegations were made that he "sexually abused a person in the early morning hours" in a bathroom at Joe's East-West in New Paltz.

Arrest records "further allege that he caused a car accident soon after he left the barroom and soon after that accident telephoned the New York state police and falsely reported that his car had been stolen," according to court documents.

Other charges heard during a March 22, 2000, trial in New Paltz in connection with the incident were third-degree falsely reporting an incident, a Class A misdemeanor, and traffic citations for leaving the scene of a property-damage accident and failure to keep right.

Nekos was convicted at the town level, but on April 5, 2002, visiting Judge Paul Czajka, presiding in Ulster County Court, reversed the sexual abuse conviction and ordered a new trial, and he dismissed three other counts.

Czajka wrote that the town had no jurisdiction over the charge of falsely reporting an incident and that prosecutors "failed to timely serve supporting depositions" for the vehicle and traffic offenses.

On Friday, Nekos called the allegations a lie and said the matter ultimately was "dismissed by prosecutors" in New Paltz Town Court on Sept. 15, 2003.

"I maintain my innocence, that there were untruths, and the charges were dismissed in my favor," he said. "If you believe in the legal system, my integrity and good name were restored."

Prosecutors and court officials in New Paltz were unable to review records Friday to confirm the status of the criminal case, which was handled by Dutchess County Assistant District Attorney Jessica Segal because of an unspecified conflict of interest in the Ulster County District Attorney's Office.

Dutchess County District Attorney William Grady said on Friday that information was not immediately available but he believed Nekos may have been allowed to plead to a lesser charge.

Nekos' lawsuit contends Kraus harmed him by distributing court documents from the criminal case. It also contends Kraus has released false information about the status of apartments owned by Nekos on Hillside Avenue.

Kraus distributed the materials "for the purpose of harming (Nekos) and tarnishing his name, integrity, business and political reputation within the community."

Kraus could not be reached for comment on Friday.

On Thursday, Nekos obtained a temporary restraining order in state Supreme Court from Judge Mary Work, blocking Kraus from further disseminating information about Nekos' 1999 arrest. A hearing regarding the order has been scheduled for Nov. 29.

Nekos' attorney, Ed Carroll, said on Friday that it would be a violation of the restraining order to discuss the law-suit, and he threatened court action against a Freeman correspondent for discussing the case at all.

"If there is mention of something that is a sealed order in the course of litigation, in court, in the courthouse itself, it may be privileged, but any discussion outside the courthouse or in the litigation itself concerning documen-tation that was sealed as the result of a dismissal, it's illegal," he said.

The Freeman obtained a copy of the court papers from the Ulster County Court records room.

Told that the case was discussed by community members following a Town Board meeting Thursday, Carroll said court action could be brought against "the idiots" who distribute the information.

Nekos is one of four candidates vying for two town justice seats in Hurley in Tuesday's election. The others are Democrat Tracy Kellogg, incumbent Democrat Elizabeth Corrado and incumbent Republican John Parker.

The authorities in northern Nigeria have held the final ceremony to inaugurate the spiritual head of the country's estimated 70 million Muslims.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sada Abubakar, received the staff of office which formalises the government's recognition of his position.

He became sultan after the death of his elder brother, Sultan Maccido, who died in a plane crash last year.

The ceremony took place in front of a crowd of thousands.

He was handed the staff by the state governor in the ancient city of Sokoto. Then members of the nobility, wearing turbans and ceremonial robes, cantered up on horseback to salute him.

The ceremony was attended by the president, Olusegun Obasanjo, and his bitter political rival, vice president Atiku Abubakar, who is campaigning to become president in elections in April.

The ceremony, with its staff of office, dates back to colonial times, and is a deliberate show that it is the government that ultimately endorses his appointment.

The 20th Sultan of Sokoto comes from a line of leaders who date back 200 years to the once vast Sokoto Caliphate, which spanned a huge swathe of West Africa.

Though his position now is largely ceremonial, he still retains considerable influence - crucial in a country which has witnessed bouts of sectarian and ethnic violence.
